Bear

The Delaware Valley was originally settled in 1638, when a Swedish warship, the Kalmar Nyckel, landed on a wharf on what is now the Christina River. The Bear area was originally a crossroads on the road between Wilmington and Dover, and legend has it that the community got its name from a tavern whose sign pictured the namesake animal. Until the 1980s and 1990s, when development really took off, Bear was mostly a rural area.

With such a prime location – near to Wilmington and too many great cities of the East – Bear’s residents have access to a never-ending supply of recreation and amusement. Delaware’s centuries of history have resulted in countless fascinating museums, including the Greenback Mill (a 300-year-old gristmill with an 18-foot waterwheel), Old Swedes Church (built in 1698 by Swedish Lutherans) and Winterthur Museum and Country Estate (Henry Francis du Pont’s American country estate). You can also visit a multitude of art museums, natural history museums, vineyards and historic homes.

Bear residents also enjoy plentiful art and culture, including diverse theatre companies and renowned musicians. If you are passionate about the outdoors, you will never be at a loss for diversion in Bear. The Wilmington area contains miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, several championship golf courses, many beautiful forests and countless parks and campgrounds. So, whether you love canoeing, birding, golfing, walking or fishing, you are only minutes away from paradise!

Delaware residents and visitors also love to take advantage of tax-free shopping! Whether you are buying a painting in one of Wilmington’s Riverfront galleries or shopping for bargains at the outlets, your purchases will not be subject to sales tax. Delaware’s nightlife also attracts young and old, residents and visitors alike. With hundreds of restaurants serving everything from the most exotic to the most local fare, your palate will never get bored! From dinner, you can venture out to a martini bar, pub, jazz café or nightclub.

In addition to these varied and exciting attractions, Bear residents enjoy a quality of life that is virtually unequalled. The residents of Bear also have access to three excellent school districts – Colonial School District, Christina School District and Appoquinimink School District – as well as the University of Delaware. From low crime rates to strong community spirit to old-fashioned neighborhoods, Bear offers the best of everything.
