Bear, Delaware: According to legend, the name “Bear” stems from a tavern located along the road from Wilmington to Dover whose sign pictured a large bear. An unincorporated collection of communities south of Wilmington and in New Castle County, Bear is home to over 18,000 people. Bear's real estate offerings are primarily anchored by single-family homes.

This suburban area in the “First County of the First State” was originally a small crossroads, a rural area that supported small farms growing corn and raising cattle. In the 1980s and 1990s, new developments and commercial areas began to pop up in the area.

The Bear and New Castle County areas are home to a treasure trove of history, including many museums such as the Delaware Art Museum, the Delaware History Museum and Rockwood Mansion Park. Originally built in the mid-19th century, Rockwood Mansion offers a Victorian home which now serves as a museum, ghost tours, and over two miles of lighted trails that connect to the Northern Delaware Greenway.

Nearby Wilmington also has its share of attractions such as shopping and art galleries on the Riverfront, Fort Christina (the first permanent settlement in Delaware Valley), and hundreds of mouth-watering restaurants. From Bear and the New Castle County area, you are also in the center of the East Coast's most exciting cities; from here, it is only 100 miles to New York City or Washington, DC, and only 30 minutes to Philadelphia, and 90 minutes to Baltimore and Atlantic City.
